About

Jewish Portobello is a walking tour application designed as part of the MA in Digital Humanities practicum at Maynooth University. Designed in conjunction with the Herzog Centre in Trinity College Dublin this app is a collaborative project aiming to engage users with a historic community.

On the technology side the app was built using Leafletjs in conjunction with Framework7 software. Temporary views, modal popups, photo browsers and slider features were implemented, among others, to create a stylistic app which would be easy to use. Both of these products are open-source and free to download. Framework7 was chosen as it is specifically designed for mobile users.

The tour is focused on a section of Portobello, once nicknamed "Little Jerusalem", due to the high numbers of Jewish people living in the area. The aim of this tour is to highlight this vibrant community and their role in many aspects of Irish life. From notable Jewish shopping district Clanbrassil Street to the heart of the city centre in Trinity College Dublin, Jewish citizens took an active part in this Irish community. In walking along those paths we hope to highlight the known and lesser known narratives of this community by providing users with a high level of engagement through textual, visual and audio components. Consisting of oral histories, liturgical music, contextual history and relevant imagery we aim to immerse users in the experience of Jewish Portobello in the early twentieth century. While the community has moved on or elsewhere their story remains.

Unfortunately, the tour is not yet available to download but will be accessible in the android app store soon.
