Welcome to Documenting Transmission. This website is designed to digitally map and display the folk process in action

The folk process is a term used to define how songs are changed as they are passed from person to person, and tradition to tradition.

It can be argued that a community or group is defined by their cultural practices and traditions. As the stories, art, and musical traditions of a community are passed down from generation to generation, they are subject to organic changes in form, context, narrative and performance. The folk process is a term that describes the transmission and transformation of literary and artistic material as it is passed down from person to person and from tradition to tradition. This aim of this project is to map and display the folk process in action by tracing motivic changes in a selected case study.
